FOR THE RECORD:
This week, our extra song is “Jolene” by Kenny Roger’s should-have-been-wife, the magnificent Dolly Parton. Parton is an interesting artist in that even people who unwaveringly hate country music will have a begrudging respect for her. At a certain point, the sheer quality of a work of art will simply overwhelm whatever bias you have. When a song is this good, AND has unintentional (?) lesbian overtones, you really just can’t go wrong.
I heard once that Dolly Parton wrote this song and “I Will Always Love You” in the same day. That’s probably apocryphal, but I’m a big “print-the-legend” guy, so let’s say it is. It’s just better that way.
